March PTCA Meeting: Trees Across California

We’re excited to invite everyone to our March PTCA meeting on Tuesday, March 3rd at Jimmy’s of Santee. This month’s meeting will feature two engaging presentations that take us beyond our daily work sites and into unique tree environments from across the globe and here in California. Both speakers will be sharing firsthand experiences from their travels, offering insight, perspective, and plenty of photos.

First, we’ll hear from Woody Brickley with the Port of San Diego, who will be presenting on trees he encountered during a recent trip to Spain. With Spain’s Mediterranean climate offering interesting similarities to Southern California, Woody will highlight notable species he observed, historic and urban tree plantings, and how cities abroad manage mature trees within dense, centuries-old infrastructure. He’ll also touch on structural pruning styles, irrigation strategies, and the way European communities integrate trees into public spaces. His presentation promises to broaden our perspective on international arboriculture practices and may spark ideas we can apply locally.

Next, Jose Bedoya with Leaf It to Us will take us on an expedition to see Hyperion, the tallest known tree in the world, located within Redwood National and State Parks. Hyperion is a coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) measuring over 379 feet tall. While the tree’s exact location remains undisclosed to protect it, Jose will share his experience traveling through old-growth redwood forests, discussing the ecology and environmental conditions that allow these trees to reach extraordinary heights. He will reflect on the structure, scale, and resilience of redwoods, as well as the physical challenges of navigating remote forest environments. This presentation will offer not only impressive imagery but also a deeper appreciation for what trees can achieve under ideal conditions.

As always, our monthly meeting is a great opportunity to connect with fellow arborists, exchange ideas, and strengthen our professional community. We look forward to seeing everyone at Jimmy’s of Santee on March 3rd for an evening of education, networking, and a shared appreciation for trees from around the world to the tallest forests on Earth.
