Hunger vs Health w Lee Wozniak

We are excited to announce the next meeting for the Professional Tree Care Association of San Diego, which will take place on Tuesday, November 5th. This month, we are pleased to welcome Lee Wozniak as our featured speaker. Lee is the Sales Representative for Target Specialty Products, and in addition to his extensive experience in the field, he is both a licensed Pest Control Advisor and a Certified Crop Advisor. His academic background includes a degree in Ornamental Horticulture from Cal State Poly Pomona, making him a well-rounded expert in tree care, soil management, and plant health.

Lee’s presentation, "Hunger vs Health," will focus on the delicate balance between fertilizing trees for growth and ensuring long-term plant health. This is a critical issue that arborists face, as over-reliance on fertilizers can boost growth but may not always contribute to a tree's overall well-being. Lee will cover several important topics that can help us make more informed decisions in the field.

One of the key areas Lee will discuss is the difference between plant nutrients and biostimulants. While nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are essential for plant growth, they alone are not enough to support all aspects of plant health. Lee will explain how biostimulants—natural or synthetic substances that promote plant growth—can complement traditional nutrients, enhancing root development, stress resistance, and overall vitality.

Another important topic Lee will cover is the interaction between plants and the bioflora at the root rhizosphere. This hidden world beneath the soil is critical to a plant's ability to absorb nutrients and defend itself from pests and disease. By understanding the symbiotic relationships between plants and the microorganisms that live around their roots, arborists can better manage soil health and improve the resilience of the trees we care for.

Lee will also help us identify major biostimulants that are particularly effective in promoting soil health and tree vitality. From humic acids and seaweed extracts to beneficial bacteria and mycorrhizal fungi, there are a range of tools at our disposal that can significantly improve the condition of the soil and, in turn, the trees that depend on it.

Finally, Lee will share practical advice on increasing soil health. Healthy soil is the foundation of tree and plant health, and Lee will discuss techniques for improving soil structure, increasing organic matter, and promoting beneficial microbial activity. These practices not only support tree growth but also create a more sustainable, long-term environment for plants to thrive in.

We encourage all arborists and plant care professionals to attend this informative session. Whether you are new to the field or have years of experience, this meeting will provide valuable insights and practical tips that you can apply in your daily work. Additionally, it will be a great opportunity to network with fellow arborists, share experiences, and continue to build our professional community.

We are confident that Lee’s presentation will be both educational and thought-provoking, offering a fresh perspective on how to balance a tree’s immediate growth needs with its long-term health. As always, continuing education units (CEUs) will be available for those attending the meeting.
